Tom Swatzell, an Alabama native, began his career at southern AM radio powerhouses WMSL and WHOS and soon joined Curley Huntley and the Dixie Drifters, a C&W band which was to become one of the most popular in the region. The Drifters quickly earned a reputation as the "terror" of radio talent shows while showcasing Swatzells talents. Instead of accepting an offer to join country star Hank Snows band, Tom stayed close to home, opening recording studios and teaching music. With his children grown, Tom retired from teaching and began touring and recording. He gained a worldwide following through his Mel Bay Dobro instruction books, as well as appearances on television, stage, and screen. Swatzell was twice nominated for the Country Music Associations Musician of the Year.
