2004 GIBSON CUSTOM SHOP HISTORIC 1934 REISSUE L5

From 1995 to 2008 the Gibson Custom Shop went all out to produce this model, historically accurate to the last detail... right down to the genuine Waverly tuners.

This 1934 L-5 is a painstaking recreation of what is considered to be the best archtop guitar that Gibson ever made and it retains period-perfect detailing throughout. It is in excellent condition and I would grade it 9.5 out of 10.  As these guitars are hand finished in the old style, the nitro cellulose finish develops a patina and will eventually check like vintage guitars. This one has some slight lacquer checking on the top which I have tried to capture in the photographs.

It plays flawlessly and sounds superb… but the visual detail is also stunning - elongated bound pickguard, hand-rubbed nitro-cellulose finish, open-back Waverly tuners, and flower pot headstock inlay. It is virtually indistinguishable from the L-5 Gibson was producing at the height of the big-band era in 1934.

The wood is absolutely spectacular bookmatched AAA tiger flame maple, and gorgeous quartersawn fine grain spruce with plenty of crossgrain silk.  Gibson usually use their very best woods on the natural guitars as it is more visible, this seems to back that up.  The only things missing are the nicks and dents from 80 years of playing, and the smell of a moldy case.

This example is in excellent condition, with original Certificate of Authentitcy, all original hardware and finish without pick or buckle rash and no fingerboard wear.  Years out of production, this high-demand guitar is already incredibly scarce on the vintage market but this one is even more special.  It was supplied new by Wildwood Guitars in Colorado who are well know for hand selecting some of the very best from Fender and Gibsons Custom Shops.  There were very few 34 reissues made and every other one I have seen is the Cremona Sunburst finish - apart from this blonde one.  Wildwood Guitars have confirmed that they had either one or two of these natural L5s.  Its either unique or at the most, there is one other - thats it!!

It is protected by a custom made Cedar Creek case ordered in the style of the original Lifton case with a double neck support for additional peace of mind.

Materials: Handcarved bookmatched solid spruce top; solid bookmatched AAA tiger flame maple back and sides; solid three piece maple neck with walnut certerstripe; solid ebony fingerboard; mother of pearl block fingerboard inlay and torch peghead inlay; abalone script "The Gibson" logo; triple bound fingerboard, body, peghead and pickguard.

Hardware: All original-style hardware including compensated bridge; gold trapeze tailpiece; triple bound tortoise pickguard; Waverly 16X1 Sta-Tite style open back tuners with butterbean keys, original style medium frets.

Notes: All the details are there: the generous 1 3/4" nut, the familiar solid neck profile, gently rounded but not chunky; the curvy triple bound tortoise guard; the hint of color in the script peghead logo; the delicate 20s style f-holes and tapering headstock.

Setup: The frets have been polished as necessary; trussrod tension and neck relief adjusted; bridge height adjusted; bridge compensation set; a new custom carved bone nut has been made and fitted, saddle slots reprofiled, bridge wheels and tuners lubricated; fingerboard and bridge oiled; body and neck cleaned and hand polished.
