Wampler Mini Ego Compressor

There aren’t many compressor users out there who haven’t owned or played a Wampler Ego Compressor—and for good reason: they’re awesome, one of the best in the business. Problem: They’re just too darn big! Some of don’t think so, but as we continue the slow march toward compact pedals, the Ego makes an excellent candidate. Enter: The Wampler Ego Compressor Mini.

Though it sheds about three-quarters of its weight, the Mini Ego sacrifices almost no functionality. The original five knobs has been pared down to three and two toggle switches, with the toggles providing the same functions as the knobs they replace. The sweet spots for those two controls are pre-dialed in by Wampler and now you can find them without having to hunt.

The three knobs are Level, Sustain and Blend. Blend? Yes, Blend. This control blends the clean, dry signal with the compressed signal for an effect known as “parallel compression,” extremely helpful for all players. Turn it all the way up to feel the full brunt of the squish, or dial it in to precisely match your amp and guitar. The Level control is self-explanatory, as is the Sustain. The Sustain control ranges from light tonal enhancement to signal-crushing squash.

The two toggles are Tone and Attack, which control the brightness of the compressed signal and the amount of time it takes the circuit to clamp down on the input signal. Most players set these once and leave them alone, and the toggles makes keying up these controls a breeze. Flick them to either side, then set the knobs and squish away!
